Why Chasing Potential Instead of Reality Keeps You Stuck

One of the easiest traps in dating is falling in love with who someone could become instead of paying attention to who they are today.

You see their potential. You imagine how incredible the relationship could be if they became more committed, communicated better, changed certain habits, or finally decided they wanted the same future you do. But potential is not compatibility.

A successful relationship has to be built around two people as they currently exist—not around a future version of someone you hope will eventually appear.

This does not mean people cannot grow. Healthy relationships should encourage growth in both partners. The difference is whether you are growing together or constantly waiting for one person to become someone else.

At Sacred Amour, we encourage clients to pay attention to actions, consistency, character, and current relationship readiness. Promises about the future can sound wonderful, but someone’s behavior today often tells you much more.

Ask yourself: If this person never changed, would I still choose this relationship?

If the answer is no, you may not be in love with the relationship you actually have. You may be attached to its potential.
The right relationship should inspire growth without requiring you to wait indefinitely for someone to become ready for you.
