Settling Versus Compromising — and How to Know the Difference

Every successful relationship requires compromise. But compromise and settling are not the same thing.

Compromise happens when two people with shared values and mutual respect adjust certain preferences to build a life together. Maybe one person prefers the city while the other prefers the suburbs. Perhaps your schedules, traditions, or everyday habits are different.

Those differences can often be worked through. Settling happens when you begin sacrificing the things that are fundamental to who you are and the future you want.

You should never have to negotiate someone’s honesty, respect, emotional availability, loyalty, or willingness to build the same kind of relationship.

At Sacred Amour, we encourage clients to distinguish between preferences and values.

Preferences might include someone’s height, hobbies, profession, or whether they perfectly match the picture you once imagined.

Values involve character, integrity, family, faith, lifestyle, commitment, and long-term goals.

Being overly rigid about preferences can cause you to overlook an incredible partner. But compromising your fundamental values simply because you are tired of being single can lead you into the wrong relationship.

Healthy love requires flexibility—but it should never require abandoning yourself.
