Not every decision requires a lengthy explanation. Yet in dating, many people find themselves repeatedly defending their boundaries, preferences, standards, or feelings to someone who has already demonstrated that they do not respect them.
You say no—and then write three paragraphs explaining why. You communicate what you need—and then immediately soften it because you are worried about appearing difficult.
You decide to leave an unhealthy situation—and somehow end up arguing your case as though you need permission.
At Sacred Amour, we believe respectful communication is essential. But communication and over-explanation are not the same thing.
A mature partner should be capable of hearing your perspective even when they disagree with it. You can be kind without abandoning your position.
You can say, This doesn’t work for me, without presenting a legal argument for why you are allowed to feel that way.
The right person will want to understand you. They will not require you to repeatedly justify reasonable boundaries simply so those boundaries can be respected.
Explain when understanding can strengthen the relationship. Communicate when something needs clarification.
But recognize when the conversation has shifted from healthy communication into trying to convince someone that your feelings deserve to matter. Your boundaries do not become more legitimate simply because you explain them perfectly.
